Hanja is the Korean name for Chinese characters. More specifically, it refers to those Chinese characters borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation. Hanja-mal or hanja-eo refers to words which can be written with hanja, and hanmun (한문, 漢文) refers to Classical Chinese writing, although "hanja" is sometimes used loosely to encompass these other concepts. Because hanja never underwent major reform, they are almost entirely identical to traditional Chinese and kyūjitai characters. Only a small number of hanja characters are modified or unique to Korean. By contrast, many of the Chinese characters currently in use in Japan (kanji) and Mainland China have been simplified, and contain fewer strokes than the corresponding hanja characters.

Although a phonetic Korean alphabet, now known as hangul, had been created by a team of scholars commissioned in the 1440s by King Sejong the Great, it did not come into widespread use until the late 19th and early 20th century. Thus, until that time it was necessary to be fluent in reading and writing hanja in order to be literate in Korean, as the vast majority of Korean literature and most other Korean documents were written in hanja. Today, hanja plays a different role. Scholars who wish to study Korean history must study hanja in order to read historical documents. For the general public, learning a certain number of hanja is very helpful in understanding words that are formed with them. Hanja are not used to write native Korean words, which are always rendered in hangul, and even words of Chinese origin — hanja-eo (한자어, 漢字語) — are written with the hangul alphabet most of the time.

Do you need to know how to pronounce Hanja in Korean, or does it suffice to just know the meanings?
Q. Assuming a person wants to learn hanja.

A. Your question is worded kind of strange, but here goes... If you want to learn hanja, you should learn the meaning and the Korean pronunciation at the same time. The meaning and Korean pronunciation are probably more important than memorizing the Chinese characters themselves because you'll probably see Hangul more often than Hanja. Example [cont.]

Which one should I learn, hangul or hanja?
Q. I'm interested in teaching myself a little bit of korean, but i don't know if i should learn hangul or hanja...which one is more commonly used? i know that one of them is easier since im chinese but i dont want that, i would like to know which one is more commonly used. thank you 8D Thank you for answering! and also, since i already know a bit of chinese then Hangul would be easier to read right? and are these 2 scripts pronounced differently? i only want to learn so i can understand a little bit of what theyre saying on those shows with all the idols :) im not learning to communicate or be like a pro 8D

A. Hanja are the Chinese characters used in Korean. They look like this . Hangul is the Korean script. It looks like this . You will see Hangul more often. It is also easier to read because the script is fool-proof. You don't have to memorize a million characters like you do in Chinese/Hanja. However, it's useful to know basic Hanja characters because they are used. Edit: Though the characters are Chinese, the Chinese language is differently pronounced in Korean than in Chinese so knowing Chinese will not help you learn to speak Korean. If you're watching idol tv shows, Hangul would be the best. I'm avid watched of DBSK shows in Korean and they usually use Hangul script.

Which orientation should an arm tattoo be?
Q. I'm thinking of getting a tattoo on the inside of my arm (just below where the elbow bends). It's going to be three Korean hanja characters for my Korean name going vertically, and I'm wondering...should it be done so it's right-side up when I look at it (i.e., when I'm holding my arm up), or the other way (i.e., so when I have my arm hanging down loosely it's right-side up and upside-down to me)?
Asked by Michael - Fri Apr 18 19:44:43 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would do it the second way you described. right-side up when the arm is hanging down. but look around at bars and on the bus, how other people have it, and whether it looks right or wrong to you. it'll hurt, by the way, but I'm sure you know that ... good luck. .
