Proxy bidding is an implementation of an English second-price auction used on eBay, in which the winning bidder pays the price of the second-highest bid plus a defined increment. It differs from a Vickrey auction in that bids are not sealed; the "current highest bid" (defined as second-highest bid plus bid increment) is always displayed. In a standard first-price English auction the winner pays the amount of their bid, regardless of competitors' bids, and it is therefore desirable to place a bid that exceeds the current highest bid by the smallest possible increment. Under proxy bidding, however, the price paid is determined only by competitors' bids and not by the amount of the new bid, and so there is no economically rational incentive to place a bid below the amount one is willing to pay, or to place multiple increasing bids. An "economically rational" bidder will therefore bid the maximum amount they are willing to pay on their first bid, and never raise their bid. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I am trying to bid for something on ebay and this automatic bidding thing or proxy bidding keeps bidding over me automaticly. How can I do proxy bidding also and how can i avoid from other people doing proxy bidding on me? best answer gets 10 POINTS! Asked by Kit Kat - Fri Jun 13 01:51:53 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. All you have to do is bid above the limit of their proxy. You will get a proxy automatically. For example, suppose the highest bid so far is $40. If you bid $80, your $80 bid will not show. You will actually get a proxy that will automatically raise your bid as needed until you either win the item or would need to bid above $80 to keep the high bid. To prevent anyone from proxy bidding against you, make sure to place your bid for the highest amount you are willing to pay. That will ensure that you can only be outbid by someone who is willing to pay more than the most you are willing to pay. Answered by JoelKatz - Fri Jun 13 01:55:51 2008 Is it possible to snipe someone who is proxy bidding on Ebay?
Q. Recently i have come across a problem on Ebay, other people keep on using proxy bidders so i cannot outbid them because they just have WAY too much money and due to budgetary reasons i cannot hope to win my items. So i was wondering, is it possibly to win an item on Ebay by sniping a person who using a proxy bid? [so basically if i bid at the very last moment will it beat the proxy bidder machine in time?] also any advise as to how i can beat this new system would be much appreciated [Please do not list any SCAMS!!!] Asked by confused n' crazy - Tue Jan 13 19:20:14 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's not a new system. ALL bidding on eBay is proxy bidding. You enter the highest bid you're willing to make, and the system automatically bids for you until that limit is reached. In order to "snipe" someone, you need to just bid up the price in the closing minutes. The price could get too high for you to continue bidding, but if you beat their high-bid, they'll only have about 60 seconds to go back and outbid you. Good luck!
