A bid price is the highest price that a buyer (i.e., bidder) is willing to pay for a good. It is usually referred to simply as the "bid."

In bid and ask, the bid price stands in contrast to the ask price or "offer", and the difference between the two is called the bid/ask spread.

An unsolicited bid or offer is when a person or company receives a bid even though they are not looking to sell. A bidding war is said to occur when a large number of bids are placed in rapid succession by two or more entities, especially when the price paid is much greater than the ask price, or greater than the first bid in the case of unsolicited bidding.

In the context of stock trading on a stock exchange, the bid price is the highest price a buyer of a stock is willing to pay for a share of that given stock. The bid price displayed in most quote services is the highest bid price in the market. The ask or offer price on the other hand is the lowest price a seller of a particular stock is willing to sell a share of that given stock. The ask or offer price displayed is the lowest ask/offer price in the market (Stock market).

Shorting futures with higher bid than ask price?
Q. I mean in a crossed market situation when the bid price is higher than the ask price. Since I am buying at the ask price and selling at a higher bid price is obvious that I have to make money...but this is not what happens. Here is one example - if I buy index at 100 USD(ask) and sell it at 110 USD(bid)...what I see in the demo software account is that the "margin unrealized profits go up"...but the "cash available" goes down... Can you explain pls...thanks.

A. If you are shorting the futures. Then you are borrowing the futures certificates and selling them first. And then you are buying these certificates back in the open market and returning them to their rightful owner. Which means that first you sell futures at 100. And then buy them back at 110. Which leaves you with a 10 dollar loss.

how do forex brokers make money on bid/ask price?
Q. if forex brokers charge no commissions, then how do they make money. how do they charge the traders money based on pip spreads or bid/ask price? so if forex brokers only make profit on the spread, then that means that the trader isn't paying the broker anything? and the more a trader trades, the more the broker makes? that true?

A. It's the spread. They just add a couple more pips onto the spread that already exists in the market, usually between 1 and 4 pips. So really there is a commission, it's just built inot the price.

I placed a bid on E-bay and the reserve is not met. Why don't they start the bid out on the reserve price?
Q. What is the point in starting the bid at a lower price than it can be sold for?
Asked by Carl - Fri May 9 18:58:38 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It the game .. a lot of folks wouldn't bid.. they like the "game" The other thing is the "cheap " card.. Did you notice that seller will usually list it with a starting bid of.99 .. Ebay charges different listing fees ..the higher your starting bid. the higher the listing fee. Now the reason for the reserve is that if they didn't do that and someone bid .99 for an item that is worth several hundred. the seller would be liable to sell it to them for the winning bidder price regardless if it's .99. So it's a way for the seller to protect themselves in a sale. hope this answers your question
